Brendan Houdek M.A., CCC-SLP, TSSLD is a New York City and Long Island-based speech-language pathologist. Brendan holds a Master of Arts degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Hofstra University as well as Bachelor of Arts degrees in Speech Communications and Philosophy/Religious Studies from St. Joseph’s College. While Brendan has training in nearly all areas of speech-language pathology, he specializes in speech sound, fluency, voice, and resonance disorders. Brendan also specializes in the enhancement of communicative abilities in individuals whose concerns are non-pathological in nature. He has expertise in the domains of accent modification, speaking voice enhancement, and public speaking skills. In addition to these areas of focus, he has extensive experience working with school-age children with language disorders.
A lifelong musician, Brendan’s passions for music and speech naturally led him to focus his therapeutic pursuits toward voice rehabilitation. Brendan believes that the worlds of voice teaching and speech-language pathology can both be greatly enriched by learning from one another. He seeks to close the gap that often exists between vocal science and vocal artistry.
A multi-instrumentalist, Brendan performs regularly in the Long Island area at various venues as well as local churches. He is grateful that he has the opportunity to do so in multiple genres and on a variety of instruments. His musical proficiencies include the voice, guitar, bass, drums, tuba, piano, ukulele, mandolin, and various forms of hand percussion. It brings him great pleasure to be able to use his gifts to lift the spirits of others through music.
Brendan took part in the NYVC Voice Teacher Training under the teaching of Justin Stoney to develop a better understanding of the nuances of the singing voice. In doing so, he has learned valuable information to assist him in his therapeutic endeavors for both singers and speakers alike. The Voice Teacher Training has been the highlight of his career as both a musician and a therapist. He truly cherishes all of the knowledge he has gained from this course.
It is one of Brendan’s greatest joys in life to provide healing to others and enable them to receive the gift of communication. It is his belief that communication is at the core of what makes us human and thus of invaluable importance. Brendan has devoted himself to doing all that he can to restore communication to those for whom it has been compromised, provide the ability to communicate to those who cannot, and enhance the communicative abilities of those who seek to do so.
